Macular Laser

  • Macular laser treatment is a specialised laser procedure used to treat conditions that cause leakage and swelling at the macula, such as diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion. The macula is responsible for detailed central vision, so treatment is aimed at stabilising and preserving this vital area.

  • When blood vessels in the retina become damaged or leaky, fluid can accumulate at the macula, leading to blurred or distorted central vision. Macular laser helps reduce this leakage, limiting further damage and supporting visual stability.

  • The laser is applied in a controlled and precise manner to targeted areas of the retina. This helps seal leaking blood vessels and reduces fluid build-up in the macula. In selected cases, it may be used alone or alongside intravitreal injections for optimal results.

  • Macular laser is an established treatment that can help reduce retinal swelling, stabilise vision, and slow disease progression in selected patients. It is often part of a broader treatment plan aimed at protecting long-term central vision. In some patients, it can minimise the need for ongoing eye injections.

  • Macular laser is performed as an outpatient procedure using anaesthetic eye drops to ensure comfort. Mr Kumar places a special contact lens on the eye to guide the laser accurately. The procedure is usually quick, and patients can go home shortly afterwards.

  • Some patients may notice mild discomfort or temporary blurring of vision after treatment. These effects are usually short-lived. Mr Kumar will arrange regular follow-up to monitor the response and determine if further treatment is required.
