Cataracts

Cataracts

  • A cataract is the clouding of the eye's natural lens, which can progressively impair vision. This makes everyday activities like reading, driving, or even watching TV more difficult.

    • Blurry or cloudy vision

    • Difficulty seeing at night/glare from headlights or street lights

    • Fading or yellowing of colours

    • Double vision in one eye

    • Frequent changes in prescription glasses or contact lenses

  • In the early stages, you may be able to manage symptoms with new glasses or brighter lighting. However, if cataracts begin to interfere with daily activities, surgery is the most effective treatment.

Cataract Surgery is a safe and highly successful procedure. During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). This is a quick, day-case procedure, and most people experience significant improvements in vision within a few days. The surgery is typically performed under local anaesthesia.

  • There are different types of IOLs to meet your specific needs. Monofocal IOLs are the basic lenses, which are available on the NHS and they provide clear vision at only one distance (near or far). For example, if you choose to have clear vision for far, you will need to wear glasses for near. With Mr Kumar, there are more extensive options available to maximise your sight to suit your lifestyle, hobbies and profession.

    EDOF IOLs

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses provide you with excellent intermediate and far vision (e.g. driving and computer use) without needing glasses.

    Multifocal IOLs

These lenses allow you to see clearly at near, far and intermediate distances, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses.

    Toric IOLs

These lenses can correct your astigmatism and cataracts. These are available as standalone or combined into EDOF or multifocal lenses.

It's important to remember that no single IOL is perfect for everyone. During your consultation, Mr Kumar will help guide you in choosing the IOL that suits you and your lifestyle best. Read more about the options available for premium lens here.
