YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy

  • YAG Peripheral Iridotomy is a laser treatment used for patients with narrow drainage angles, primary angle closure, angle-closure glaucoma or those at risk of an acute angle closure attack. In these eyes, the drainage angle (where fluid leaves the eye) becomes too narrow or blocked. This can cause a sudden or gradual rise in eye pressure, which may damage the optic nerve and cause permanent vision loss.

A YAG Peripheral Iridotomy creates a very small opening in the iris (the coloured part of the eye), allowing fluid to flow more freely and reducing pressure.

  • PI is an outpatient procedure. On arrival, drops will be given to constrict the pupil. You will then be seated at a machine similar to the one used for examining the eye. Numbing drops will be applied, and a special contact lens will be placed on the eye. You may see flashes of light, hear clicking sounds and may experience slight discomfort.

  • Mr Kumar will instil eye drops immediately after the procedure and prescribe a short course of eye drops to take home. He will arrange a follow-up appointment in a few weeks.

We advise you not to drive on the day of the procedure. You can return to normal activities within 24 hours.

  • PI is generally a safe procedure, but possible risks include temporary blurred vision or raised eye pressure, minimal bleeding inside the eye and inflammation. Rarely, the procedure may need to be repeated if the opening closes.

  • Mr Kumar is a highly experienced ophthalmic laser specialist with over 35 years of experience performing laser procedures across a wide range of clinical settings and using multiple laser platforms. Mr Kumar runs a dedicated consultant-led laser treatment clinic at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, ensuring expert, continuity-focused care.
