YAG Capsulotomy

  • During cataract surgery, the natural lens of your eye is replaced with an artificial lens. The lens sits in front of a thin, clear membrane called the posterior capsule. Over time, this capsule can become cloudy or thickened. This condition is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and is sometimes referred to as a “secondary cataract.”

    • Blurred or hazy vision

    • Glare or halos around lights

    • Difficulty reading

    • Reduced contrast or dull colours

  • A YAG laser capsulotomy is a simple and painless outpatient procedure used to treat PCO. A special laser is used to create a small opening in the cloudy posterior capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again and restoring your vision.

  • On arrival, you will be given eye drops to dilate your pupil, which will make your vision blurry. You must not drive after your appointment. After approximately 15-20 minutes, you will be seated at a machine similar to the one used for eye examinations. You may see flashes of light and hear clicking sounds, but the procedure is painless. You should be able to blink normally during the procedure.

  • After the procedure, Mr Kumar will instil eye drops. Normally, you will not need any further eyedrops, and you can return to normal activities. We advise you not to drive on the day of the procedure.

You will notice an improvement in your sight within a few hours once the effect of the dilating drops wears off.

  • The procedure is generally very safe, but as with any procedure, there are small risks, including:

    • Temporary increase in eye pressure - Mr Kumar will instil eye drops to minimise the risk

    • Minimal inflammation- Mr Kumar will instil eye drops to minimise the risk

    • Floaters (small moving spots in vision), which improve within 1 week
