What is Wet AMD:

Wet age-related macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula and leak fluid or blood, causing damage to central vision.

Other names:

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration

  • Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD)

  • Exudative age-related macular degeneration

  • Neovascular AMD

  • Exudative AMD

  • Choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) due to AMD

Why wet AMD requires urgent treatment

Wet AMD is a sight-threatening condition that primarily affects people over the age of 50. It develops when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision used for reading, driving, recognising faces and other everyday activities.

These abnormal blood vessels are fragile and prone to leaking fluid or blood, causing swelling and damage to the macula. Without prompt treatment, this can lead to irreversible scarring and permanent loss of central vision. Although peripheral vision is usually preserved, untreated Wet AMD can significantly affect independence and quality of life.

SYMPTOMS and when to seek urgent advice:

  • Distorted vision

  • Straight lines appearing bent

  • Sudden blurred central vision

  • Dark spots

  • Difficulty reading

  • Faces becoming unclear

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek urgent assessment, as early diagnosis and treatment is critical.

TREATMENT for Wet Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Modern treatment with anti-VEGF injections has transformed the outlook for patients with Wet AMD. These medications reduce the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels, helping to stabilise vision and, in many cases, improve sight. The earlier treatment is started, the greater the chance of preserving useful vision. Delayed treatment allows continued damage to the macula, reducing the likelihood of visual recovery.
