YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy
PI is a laser treatment used to treat or prevent angle-closure glaucoma. In some eyes, the drainage angle (where fluid leaves the eye) becomes too narrow or blocked. This can cause a sudden or gradual rise in eye pressure, which may damage the optic nerve.

A YAG PI creates a very small opening in the iris (the coloured part of the eye), allowing fluid to flow more freely and reducing pressure.
PI is an outpatient procedure. On arrival, drops will be given to constrict the pupil. You will then be seated at a machine similar to the one used for examining the eye. Numbing drops will be applied, and a special contact lens will be placed on the eye. You may see flashes of light, hear clicking sounds and may experience slight discomfort.
PI is generally a safe procedure, but possible risks include temporary blurred vision or raised eye pressure, minimal bleeding inside the eye and inflammation. Rarely, the procedure may need to be repeated if the opening closes.
