Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) for Glaucoma in Reading & Windsor

Mr Praveen Kumar is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist providing specialist

glaucoma and laser eye care in Reading and Windsor, Berkshire.

  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, commonly called SLT, is a laser procedure used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP).

The laser is applied to the trabecular meshwork, the drainage tissue in the front of the eye. SLT uses short pulses of low-energy laser light to stimulate the eye's natural drainage system, helping aqueous fluid drain more effectively and lowering pressure inside the eye.

SLT does not involve an incision and is performed as an outpatient procedure. It may be recommended as an alternative to glaucoma eye drops, particularly for suitable patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.

    • Painless and quick procedure

    • Non-invasive

    • May replace or reduce the need for daily drops all together.

    • Alternative if eye drops are not working well enough or causing side effects or prefer a treatment that does not involve daily drops

    • Can be repeated if necessary

  • SLT may be suitable for selected people with:

    • Ocular hypertension

    • Primary open-angle glaucoma

    • Chronic open-angle glaucoma

    • Eye pressure that is not adequately controlled with medication

    • Difficulty using glaucoma eye drops

    • Side effects or intolerance from glaucoma eye drops

    • Difficulty applying drops consistently

    • A preference to reduce reliance on daily eye drops

NICE recommends 360° SLT as an initial treatment option for specific patients with newly diagnosed ocular hypertension or chronic open-angle glaucoma, and a repeat SLT may be considered when the effect of a previous successful treatment diminishes. Suitability must be assessed individually.

SLT is not suitable for every type or stage of glaucoma. Mr Kumar will discuss whether it is appropriate for your eyes.

  • SLT is performed as an outpatient procedure.
Before treatment, your eye will be examined and drops may be used to prepare the eye. Numbing drops are applied before a special contact lens is placed gently on the eye.
You will sit at a laser machine similar to the equipment used during a routine eye examination.
Mr Kumar then applies controlled laser pulses to the drainage tissue of the eye. You may see flashes of light and hear clicking sounds during the procedure.
SLT does not require an incision. The procedure itself is usually relatively quick, although you may need to remain at the clinic for observation and pressure checks before going home.

  • SLT is generally considered a safe treatment, but, like any medical procedure, it has potential risks and side effects.

    These may include:

    • Temporary eye inflammation

    • Temporary blurred vision

    • Eye discomfort or irritation

    • A temporary increase in eye pressure

    • Redness or sensitivity

    • In uncommon cases, a more significant pressure rise requiring treatment

Your individual risks will depend on your eye condition and medical history. Mr Kumar will discuss the benefits and risks with you before treatment.
