CSR: FAQs

If you have been diagnosed with Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) or have recently noticed blurred or distorted vision, you may have many questions about your condition.   • Central Serous Retinopathy (also called Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR)) is a condition in which fluid accumulates beneath the central retina (the macula). This causes the retina to lift slightly, resulting in blurred or distorted central vision.

     

    CSR most commonly affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60 and is more frequently seen in men, although it can affect anyone.

  • Symptoms may develop suddenly and can include:

    • Blurred central vision

    • Distorted or wavy vision (metamorphopsia)

    • Objects appearing smaller or further away than they really are

    • Reduced colour perception

    • Difficulty reading or recognising faces

    • A dark or grey patch in the centre of vision

     

    Symptoms usually affect one eye but may occasionally occur in both eyes.

  • The exact cause is not fully understood, but CSR is associated with several risk factors, including:

    • Emotional stress

    • Corticosteroid medications (tablets, inhalers, nasal sprays, skin creams or injections)

    • High blood pressure

    • Obstructive sleep apnoea

    • Pregnancy

    • Certain personality traits associated with high stress levels

    • anatomical changes in drainage vessels

     

    Many patients develop CSR without any obvious cause.

  • Most first episodes resolve naturally within three to four months with gradual improvement in vision.

     

    However, some patients develop persistent or recurrent fluid beneath the retina, which can permanently damage the macula if left untreated. These happens in eyes with anatomical and structural predisposition. Hence early specialist assessment is important to determine whether treatment is required.

  • You should seek prompt assessment if you experience:

    • Sudden blurred central vision

    • Distorted straight lines

    • Persistent blurred vision lasting more than a few days

    • Recurrent episodes of CSR

    • Vision that fails to improve after several weeks

     

    Early diagnosis also helps exclude other retinal conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or retinal vein occlusion.

    Many patients recover without treatment during their first episode.

    Treatment may be recommended if:

    • Fluid persists beyond three months.

    • Vision continues to deteriorate or does not recover.

    • The condition repeatedly recurs.

    • Both eyes are affected.

    • Your occupation requires excellent vision.

    • Imaging shows changes that increase the risk of permanent retinal damage.
