Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

  • SLT is a laser treatment used to lower the pressure inside the eye. It is now the first-line treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It can also be used alongside eye drops.

    • Painless and quick procedure

    • Non-invasive

    • May replace or reduce the need for daily drops

    • Alternative if eye drops are not working well enough or causing side effects

    • Can be repeated if necessary

  • SLT is a great option if you have:

    • Eye pressures that are not adequately controlled by drops

    • Intolerance/allergy to eye drops

    • Difficulty putting eye drops in (e.g. arthritis, tremors etc)

    • Difficulty applying drops consistently (e.g. dementia, busy lifestyle)

    • A personal preference to avoid eye drops

  • SLT is an outpatient procedure. On arrival, drops will be given to constrict the pupil. You will then be seated at a machine similar to the one used for examining the eye. Numbing drops will be applied and a special contact lens will be placed on the eye. You may see flashes of light and hear clicking sounds.

  • SLT is generally a safe procedure, but possible risks include mild inflammation and a temporary rise in eye pressure. To minimise these risks, Mr Kumar will instil drops after the procedure.
